New to the Video World

So I have decided to fluff off here at work and concentrate on more important things, like Jesus, Sojourn, and Technology... And how we mix these three so that the gospel is broadcast to not only Huntsville, but to the planet...

All of us on the "Tech Team" are new to video. So every week there are new discoveries. Every time a video is filmed or produced quality, delivery, and creativity increase.

One of the resources that has been super valuable has been http://www.studentfilmmakers.com and there monthly magazine. Wendy gets this publication free as a result of teaching students Theater and Film. This week I was able to reference on of the magazines for help I needed with a video lighting setup.

One of the best references, for me, was found in the January 2007 edition of "Studentfilmmaker". The article on HD vs HDV was great because it covered the history and technical specs of DV, HD (720p, 1080i, 1080p) and HDV. Where this helped me the most is during the rendering stage were I was trying match an output with the format I had filmed.

Below is a reference I compiled (cheat sheet) from the article...

DV
Aspect Ration: 4:3
Interlaced Scanning
Pixel Aspect Ration is 720x480
Frames per second rate: 29.97
210,000 pixels per frame

720p (Panasonic Format/adopted by JVC)
Aspect Ration: 16:9
Progressive Scanning
Pixel Aspect Ration is 1280x720
Frames per second rate: 23.976, 24, 29.97, 30, and 60
921,600 pixels per frame
Used by ABC and Fox

1080i (Sony Format)
Aspect Ration: 16:9
Interlaced Scanning
Pixel Aspect Ration is 1920x1080
Frames per second rate: 29.97 frames (59.94i) and 30 (60i)
1,555,200 pixels per frame
7x greater data stream than DV
Used by NBC and CBS

1080p (Sony Format)
Aspect Ration: 16:9
Progressive Scanning
Pixel Aspect Ration is 1920x1080
Frames per second rate: 23.976, 24, 25p, 29.97, 30, 59.94i, and 60i
2,073,600 pixels per frame
Comes closest to 35mm look and picture quality.

Right now we are shooting DV at Sojourn. It is a good format to learn with. Hopefully soon we will be able to shoot HD, however, there is lots to learn before that. Hope this helps those of you who are new to the video game as we are...
